I also tried a plug-in and that didn't work. Eventually I bought a touch lamp kit and rewired the lamp. It was easy and works great. With a single tap anywhere on the lamp where there is metal you can turn the light on or off. Great at night for turning the light on in the dark just by reaching out. There is also a model which allows for dimming the light as well as turning it on and off.
