Basically, this is a fairly bright LED which will activate when two conditions are both met: 1) it has to be dark; and 2) it has to detect motion. This makes the light perfect for use in our boat. When someone stirs in the middle of the night, instead of having to grope around for a light source, this little light will simply activate, and in a dark enclosed area it provides sufficient light to enable one to get around. For a garage it is similarly useful in this type of context. The unit accepts two batteries which should mean that it will function for years between battery changes since it is only active when actually needed.There are countless applications where this little unit will prove useful. What this means is that when you have the light set to Auto, it will automatically illuminate when a warm body passes by. I've set the light up in the kitchen, dead of night and walked in. The light illuminates as expected.The amount of light is limited, probably just as much as a standard night light. In other words, it's enough light to see to walk around a darkened room but not bright enough to completely illuminate a room. You could definitely use this as a reading light if you can figure out how to mount it in a way you don't have to hold it. There are a couple of ways to utilize this in the box. There is a way to use a double sided sticker included for a more permanent mounting, a magnetic base to mount on say, the fridge and there is also a kind of belt clip included.
