Amazon.com Product Review

Got a floodlight with a broken motion sensor or want to upgrade for greater detection range? The Heath Zenith SL-5316-WH-A gives you a 240-degree sensitivity zone, and the range is adjustable from 15 to 100 feet (the low range is convenient if you don't want your light going off every time a car drives by). It also features "Dual Brite" lighting, which means you can use it for low-level accent lighting in addition to the full-light effect you get with motion-activation. An included timer allows you to set low-light mode for three hours, six hours, or dusk to dawn (an automatic photocell deactivates the unit in daylight). You can also turn the light on and off at will via the manual override that mounts to an existing indoor switch. Requires 300 watt bulb. Ten-year warranty.--Josh Dettweiler

I have two of these units, one on my front porch that doesn't work below 30F and one on the side of my house that doesn't work below 60F and/or at high humidities, and all of my sensors are fully protected from rain/snow under the roof soffits. This is sad because the one I had before was a Heath/Zenith unit and it lasted for over 15 years, until the lens literally rotted out from UV exposure. These newer units are cheaply made and unreliable at best. I'm going with the older 180 field-of-view model, I've read good things about it. They're no longer available the the big box home improvement stores so I'm going with the Cooper Lighting MS180W 180 model sold here at Amazon. The specs sound like it has the same electronics as the older 180 Heath/Zenith 5407 unit and it's nicer looking.

UPDATE 5/09/11: I changed the bulb (100W --> 75W halogen, NOT fluorescent) in the one on the side of my house and now it cycles on and off endlessly, complete junk now, NEVER AGAIN... Read more

Sensor kept going on and off for no reason so I called customer service and they sent me a small plastic light shield for the photocell. It seems to work much better now but I am still checking it out.

After installing this unit as a replacement, I was constantly plagued with it turning on and off relentlessly through the night from wind fluttering leaves or due to rain. I turned the sensitivity down fully, but that still did nothing to rectify the problem. I tried placing duct tape over most of the sensor and that didn't help much either plus it defeated the purpose of having the sensor in the first place.

So, I purchased this unit here on the Amazon site --> Desa International/Heat SL-5407-A Outdoor Motion Detector and so far so good. Works great !!... just right. No more sensitivity issues !, but is triggered when it's supposed to be.
